Mid Year Reporting
The New Zealand Ministry of Education is currently undertaking a refresh of the national curriculum to ensure it is relevant, fit for purpose, and prepares young people for their future:
- This process will be ongoing for many years and will continue to evolve. Teachers are working hard to understand and incorporate these changes, and as always the needs and interests of child/ren are at the heart of what they do within classroom programmes and practices.
- The curriculum is being updated in stages, with new content for English (Years 0-6) and Mathematics and Statistics (Years 0-8) currently available. The updated curriculum is intended to be more consistent with a scope and sequence specifying content at each year level. Expected levels for students now relate directly to their year level at school - for example Y1 students are expected by the end of the year to achieve the Year 1 English and Mathematics curriculum content.
- For mathematics and statistics, the content expected to be taught at each year level has been revised in order to be internationally comparable resulting in higher benchmarks/expectations, it's possible that a child's progress and achievement levels might appear lower as the expectations at each class level have increased.
- Twice yearly reports will still be provided on children’s progress in relation to these new learning expectations.
- We have revised our mid year report template in relation to key aspects of literacy and mathematics. Teachers will make an overall judgement, drawing on a range of data sources, to determine the extent to which your child has control of each aspect in relation to their year level.
- The government is looking to release new tools and resources to schools with this curriculum change over time.
