Tim Harraway visited our school assembly to receive the money from our Mufti Day Fundraiser as he had completed riding his bike the length of New Zealand for Embracing Hearts.  Alan from St John was also here for us to show the whole school how to use the defibrillator and tell us the statistics of the positive difference that they make in the community. We feel very lucky to have had so much support to bring the defibrillator, 24 hour Lock Box and pads to our school community where it will be placed outside Rooms 6 and 7.  Thanks to Pat O'Sullivan Plumbing, Embracing Hearts, Heart Kids NZ, and the Bradshaw and O'Sullivan whānau for enabling this to happen.

This week our Senior School  students have been participating in the St Johns Education Programme which has included how to apply simple first aid and how to deal with emergencies.  Alan Reilly also included sessions on CPR and how to use our new defibrillator.  Please talk to your children about these sessions, and particularly around how to get into a phone to call 111 on your cellphone if you don't have a landline.  Most cell phones have the ability to call 111 without entering a passcode, however you do need to set this up with your phone.  Also show your child where the charger for your phone lives as well so that they can get this if needed in an emergency.

James Britton (1970) said, “Reading and writing floats on a sea of talk.”   Therefore to build strong foundations for literacy as whānau, we need to infuse talk into the stories that we read to our children, events that we see or hear about, noticings of what is around us and give our children time to reflect, wonder, and question. The best place to do this is the dinner table.

Miss Williams and Kahikatea have been visiting the kindergarten sharing pūrakau.  Recently they shared Wakatipu and the Giant and Hatupatu and the Birdwoman, retold through loose parts.  The students at the kindergarten were a really great audience and now every time a new story is told in Kahikatea the students are keen to share it with their kindy buddies.
Kahikatea are looking forward to Anna- Leigh and the kindergarten students sharing some stories and/or pūrakau that are special to them.

Our Year 5/6 leadership system is made up of 3 levels based on our school’s graduate profile.

Students write a letter outlining the service they are providing, the responsibilities they have and how they are managing themselves in relation to our school values of ako, manaakitanga, whanaungatanga and kaitiakitanga.
